Why I’m Working for Ward 7 as an Independent Candidate
Myke Atkinson is an independent candidate, working for the people of Ward 7.
Protecting Local Democracy and Empowering Our Communities
Recent changes by the provincial government, including the creation of municipal political parties, have sparked important conversations about the future of local democracy. While over 70% of Albertans expressed opposition to these changes in the government's own public survey, the province still chose to impose partisan politics. What matters now is how we use our voice and our vote as a community to respond to this move to undermine our local democracy and self-governance.
I believe in a Calgary where decisions are made transparently and locally — where the voices of our residents guide the path forward. Strong, independent leadership means standing up for our city's autonomy and ensuring local priorities aren’t overshadowed by outside political agendas.
Now, more than ever, we must come together as a community to protect our local democracy, ensuring that our voices — not partisan agendas — guide the decisions that shape our city.
Why Independent Leadership Matters
Some candidates running for Ward 7, including our current councillor, have embraced municipal political parties. While this may seem like a step forward, it risks creating divisions and party-driven decision-making that can overshadow the needs of our community.
Recent examples in other cities, like Vancouver, have shown how party politics can complicate accountability between elected officials and the people they serve. Do we really want our municipal government to suffer from the gridlock and reduced accountability of provincial and federal politics?
Calgary deserves better. As an independent candidate, I am free to listen, collaborate, and act solely in the best interest of Ward 7 — without the constraints of party lines or external pressures. My only allegiance will be to the people I serve.
Proudly Running Independent for Ward 7
That’s why I am proud to run as an independent candidate for Ward 7 — to be a voice for our community, unbound by partisan agendas. If elected, I won’t be hindered by the competing priorities of the mayor, other councillors, or a political party. I won’t ignore the concerns of my constituents or compromise my values to serve party goals. Ward 7 needs a champion who works for the people — not for a party — every single day.
Together, we can build a brighter future for Calgary driven by community voices rather than partisan interests. I’m ready to work for Ward 7, and I look forward to earning your vote over the coming months.
